Downtown Shuttle is Back

2011-10-31

Do you remember about 5 years ago when there was still a downtown Cedar Rapaids shuttle that took  workers from parking lots to their buildings? I barely do. I mostly remember people complaining that they could walk to their buildings faster than the shuttle could get them there. Well that was then, and now the Downtown District has worked with Park Cedar Rapids, Neighborhood Transit Service (NTS), and downtown businesses to bring back a service that should be better! It’s really quite smart and I’m excited to see it start up on November 7th.

This service has been in the works as a way to solve some temporary parking shortages due to construction, and some limited parking perceptions, to continue to please existing companies and attract new ones to the Cedar Rapids downtown. One hope is that more people can use the parking areas that are farther from the downtown center and not have to trudge to work in the freezing cold that we’re sure to get soon.

The shuttle will complete its loop in 10  minutes, which is an improvement from the complaints I heard about the previous service. It will be making use of NTS buses and staff during times that their main service is in low demand, so we’re using existing resources more efficiently and adding a new revenue source for NTS. And the service will be FREE to everyone! I, and others, are hoping that this breaks down some more barriers and stereotypes about riding the bus by providing a very useful service and helping people get familiar with our local buses. Now the buses in use won’t be the long CR Transit cruisers that you see on the streets, and instead will be smaller ones that are more typical for tours or private rentals, but hey, its still public transportation!

The service will begin on November 7th and all of the details can be found on the Park Cedar Rapids site. A great big thanks to Park Cedar Rapids, Intermec, Iowa Health System, NTS, and Downtown District for making this happen!

Now, I would love to hear if you’re going to try this out, and then what you think once you do. Will you be willing to park farther away with this service? Or are you just hoping that others use it so that you can park closer?

Tips and Tricks: Summer Discount Opportunities

2011-06-14

This past Sunday my husband and I went to hear the Glenn Miller Orchestra play downtown for the second year in a row. This event has become my reminder that the Freedom Festival has begun in Cedar Rapids. It’s a great way to ease into the feeling of summer, plus there is good music and good company. Unfortunately, this year the orchestra was only able to play one set before a rain shower interrupted our entertainment and canceled the show.

This event reminds me that summer is already here, and it also reminds me to buy a Freedom Festival button for $3 that will get me into some great events, and also get me free bus rides until the 4th of July! You can’t beat that deal anywhere, except maybe the week that bicyclists get free bus rides

Along with the Freedom Festival deal, students get a discounted cash rate between June 6th and August 20th this year. Much cheaper than buying them a car or paying for gas.

See official announcements and dates on the Cedar Rapids Transit site, and get riding this summer!

Route 12 Bus Party Recap

2010-07-24

Today we rode Route 12, the last of the 14 metro area fixed routes. We made it through them all! At first this route seemed very efficient. We knew that Westdale was a major destination, and the route swiftly cruised down Wilson, approaching this area. But then instead of going right to Westdale, we turned and passed Van Buren School, continuing through residential areas before passing between Target and Walmart. Technically we passed the back side of Westdale Mall next, but we looped way out to West Post Rd. before stopping at the actual mall stop. Of course there are many other destinations along Route 12 that would get frequent use, but since we were focused on Westdale, this route felt like a long trip before we got there.

Brewed Awakenings was our lunch destination this time. They had some delicious sandwiches and a relaxing atmosphere!

We have now completed Bus Parties for all 14 of the metro area fixed routes, but we’re not done yet! Although the Bus Parties will be taking a break, we will kick them back up once the current routes start getting updated. And speaking of… please attend the next Cedar Rapids City Council meeting on July 27th to show support for the changes proposed through the Fixed Route Study conducted last fall. Brady has written a nice summary and you can read our reports for Open House One, Two, and Three. If you can’t attend, please send your comments to Office of the City Clerk, 3851 River Ridge Drive NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402 before Tuesday.

Thank you for all of the support so far!

Tips and Tricks: Freedom Festival and Summer Fares

2010-06-21

Every year Cedar Rapids hosts the Freedom Festival, three weeks of festivities that lead up to the 4th of July. Many of the events require you to have a Freedom Festival button to attend, and the buttons are only $3. That $3 button also gets you free bus rides for the duration of the Freedom Festival. I didn’t get to this post right away, but there are still two weeks left of the festival, more than enough to make the $3 a steal!

Cedar Rapids sent out the following press release:

“CR Transit is offering free bus rides to anyone wearing an official 2010 Freedom Festival Button through July 4th.  CR Transit buses visit all Freedom Festival event locations, making attending daytime events easy and affordable for the entire family.  Anyone can find a bus that goes to their event by visiting the website at www.cedar-rapids.org and selecting the City Buses link at the bottom of every page.   Ride Route 10 to see the Zoo Man performance at the Cedar Rapids library on June 17th or hop on Route 7 to check out the 100 Adventure base at the Kirkwood Campus on June 18th.  CR Transit is working to help families enjoy all the City of Cedar Rapids has to offer this summer.”

I like that they’re promoting both the Freedom Festival events and the routes that can be taken to get there. Let’s see more of this!

The other deal is summer fares for students. Each summer CR Transit reduces the fare for students 18 and younger, presumably to encourage them to use transit to travel safely around the city. That makes their fare only $0.50, but only applies to cash (no discounted passes). This deal last from June 14th to August 21st this year, so get your students out exploring the community on the cheap, or better yet, getting them to a summer job to make some money!

More information can be found on CR Transit’s site.

Last Connections 2040 Open House

2010-05-21

Do you know what I haven’t done in a while? Gone to a city open house!

This coming Monday and Tuesday we’ll all get to do just that. It will be our last chance to weigh in on Connections 2040, the Corridor MPO’s long-range plan. And weighing in is more important than you think.

The Corridor MPO had our monthly meeting yesterday and we went over the draft for the long-range plan. The ~200 page thick draft has a lot of information in it, but the concern is not how long it might take one to read, but in how we will achieve our plan with the limited MPO funds that we control. We will of course be looking at creative ways to fill in funding gaps, but it is just as important to make sure the projects we choose are necessary and prioritized appropriately. This is where YOU come in to play. Let the Corridor MPO know which projects are important and which ones can wait or be removed. Share your opinion and vision for our metro area so that our money is flowing in the right directions. Also, make sure that the plan reflects how you want to see the area grow because transportation and development go hand in hand.

Two afternoon open houses will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (350 1st Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids) on Monday, May 24th and Tuesday, May 25th. An evening open house will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 pm in the Hiawatha Community Center (101 Emmons Street in Hiawatha) on Monday, May 24th. They will be open house format and you are encouraged to come and go when you can. A brief presentation will be held twice during each open house, at 11:15 am and 12:15 pm during the afternoons, and at 4:45 and 5:45 pm during the evening.

The official press release can be found Corridor MPO_Press Release_May 20 2010, and for more information you can visit www.connections2040.com.

Free Bus Rides for Bicyclists

2010-05-12

Have you heard about the great bike-bus collaboration next week? May is National Bike Month and Cedar Rapids bicyclists and city staff have been busy preparing lots of activities to spread the word about biking. I love biking to work, but I’m definitely a fair weather rider, so with all of the recent rain we’re getting I was giddy to see that CR Transit is getting involved in Bike to Work Week!

You can read the full announcement here, but the summary is that they are providing FREE bus rides for anyone who uses the bike rack on the front of the bus. This perk is available during Bike to Work Week which is next week, May 17th – May 21st.

Ok great, but why am I so giddy? Well, being a fair weather rider means that I prefer to ride when it’s “nice”. In Iowa, it can be nice in the morning and turn ugly by the afternoon, so I understand why many people don’t choose bike transportation if they aren’t equipped for weather. I also work downtown and live on the north side. This is great riding downhill most of the way into work, but a bit more challenging uphill on the way home. A little lift for part of the climb can be welcome after a long day! And lastly, we’ve had to modify my morning bus stop drop-off routine due to the Council construction and I guess I just needed a carrot to finally give the bus bike racks a try.

As a last word of encouragement to take advantage of this opportunity, don’t be concerned about how to work the bike racks! The bus drivers are able to help if you need it and the announcement has good instructions. For those of us who learn better visually, you can watch a video with good, well paced instructions and demonstrations on using bus bike racks here. The rack is not exactly the same as what CR Transit buses have, but the setup is.

May is National Bike Month, but take it a step further and use two alternative modes of transportation with CR Transit!

Interested in more Bike Month information? Check out the Bike Iowa site and announce your participation by registering for Bike to Work Week.

Get Your Ride On: Winner!

2010-02-20

Well this freebie was won by a land slide. Congratulations to tracee for being our first ever freebie winner and for sharing her busing story! Even though we know that the CR Transit system needs improvements, it’s great to hear how it is currently helping riders. And we love tracee’s appreciation for bus drivers! We are happy to be putting one 10-Ride pass into use for someone and hope to provide more free stuff in the future.

Have a great wintry day and come join us for the Route 8 Bus Party at 11:10 today. Riding buses in the snow is something everyone should experience!

Free Stuff: Get Your Ride On

2010-02-15

We wanted to kick off some good transit vibes in 2010 and, to spread our love of transit, we’re going to give one lucky person a treat. Well hopefully more than just a treat. We want to encourage trying public transit, break down some more barriers, and let someone “test ride” CR Transit. And to do just that, we’re going to give away a 10-Ride pass!

Our hope is that the pass will help hesitant, potential riders give transit a try, or reward a current rider for supporting the system. The flexibility of the 10-Ride pass means it doesn’t expire, and can still get you to work and back 5 times, or you could just cruise around town if you need to get out for an hour.

To give it away fairly, we’re asking those interested to leave a comment on this post with a brief bit about why you ride or why you want to give CR Transit a try. We will use Random.org to generate the number of the winner from the list of comments as of 11:59pm February 19th and announce on February 20th. Your email is required so you can be contacted and receive the prize. If possible, we will hand over the pass at the Route 8 bus party on the 20th, but other arrangements can be made if the winner is not able to make it.

Only citizens in the Cedar Rapids metro area that will be able to use the pass are eligible. Only one entry per person.

We humbly realize that we’re not a huge blog (yet?), so your chances of winning are probably pretty good. Come give transit a real try on us and good luck!

Connections 2040

2010-02-15

This Thursday, Feburary 18th, the Corridor MPO will be hosting another set of workshops focused on goals for the future of our community. These are planned to be discussion based, and a great venue to share your priorities for our metro area. The workshops will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 350 1st Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids from 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm. Full information can be found in the announcement below and at www.Connections2040.com.

The Corridor MPO would appreciate having a headcount of those planning to come so they can be prepared. Although it’s not required, we are encouraged to register on the Connections 2040 site here.

The more voices we have sharing priorities for our future, the better our community can become. It sounds cheesy, but it is true, and if you don’t share your ideas now, you don’t have the right to complain when things don’t turn out how you want them. Participate and take pride in what you can change!

We Want to Know!

2010-01-09

So far we’ve asked you to participate in one poll, but there are a lot more things that we’d like your opinion on in the transit world. So to handle our on-going polls, especially for people who find us later in our blog life, we have created a page dedicated to asking you!

Now you can check up on any polls you may have missed, or compare your opinion to other viewers. Don’t worry about needing to re-vote, because they’ll be the same polls in the posts, just organized away for easy access. So enjoy sharing your transit views, and be sure to give us your opinion on any polls you may have missed. Why? Because we want to know!
